Walking is such a great way to get the exercise you need for good health! My doctor has started me on a program of walking six days a week. At first, it can be confusing knowing how to begin properly. I’d like to share with you some ideas that have helped me get going. After you’ve seen your medical provider and gotten the green light to start, implement these steps to get moving and stay moving.
How to Begin a Successful Walking Program
- Set Reasonable Goals.
Ask your doctor for recommendations on duration and speed. Once you have established your action plan, map out your route. Be sure you will be walking in a safe area during an appropriate time of day. In times of bad weather, walk indoors on a treadmill or at the mall. Set your goals and do all you can to reach them each day.
- Wear the Right Gear.
Walking in the appropriate athletic shoes makes all the difference! It is horrible to start out and end up with blisters on your feet. Make sure you have the proper shoes, good absorbent socks and comfortable clothes. The correct equipment will help you succeed.
- Take it Slow.
The first time I headed out to walk, I was overzealous. I live at the base of a mountain and the roads in our neighborhood have lots of hills. Well, I can tell you to begin slowly from experience! I was going full speed when I first started my walking program and going up a hill I felt a “ping” in my leg. I didn’t think much of it until I woke up the next morning and couldn’t stand on my leg. After another visit to the doctor’s office and many ice packs, I could walk again after a week or so. It was disappointing to get side railed because I hadn’t paced myself properly. Learn from my mistake and take it slow!
- Just Start Walking and Be Consistent!
Stop procrastinating and decide to take that first step now! Don’t wait until your health is failing to get in shape. Rather, get in shape now to keep your health from failing. Perhaps you might want to walk with your spouse or a group of friends for encouragement. Whether in a group or by yourself, once you have set your goals, commit to daily fulfilling them and just be consistent.
Nothing will make you feel better than getting the exercise needed for good health. Walking is inexpensive, fun and improves your mood as well. What are you waiting for? Take these ideas and begin your own walking program today!
