Easy Play Dough Recipe
This is a great way to have your kids learn to measure and follow a recipe. The ingredients are all natural and will make a lovely smooth modeling dough that your children can roll out, use with cookie cutters and craft into their favorite shapes. The recipe will take about 5 minutes and will definitely require adult supervision since boiling water is needed. Stored in airtight containers, this play dough should last around 6 months.
INGREDIENTS:
- 2 cups regular all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1/2 cup salt
- 2 tablespoons cream of tartar
- 1 to 2 cups boiling water (add in increments a little at a time – I usually use just a little over a cup)
- food coloring (be creative)
- 1-2 drops glycerin (this makes the dough shiny)
- 1 drop of scented oil (optional)
STEPS:
- Mix the flour, salt, cream of tartar and oil in a large mixing bowl.
- Add food coloring to the boiling water first – then into the dry ingredients.
- Stir continuously until it becomes a sticky, thoroughly mixed dough.
- Add the glycerin and mix. (If you’d like it scented, add a drop at this point as well.)
- Allow it to cool down in the mixing bowl.
- After the mixture has cooled, take it out of the bowl and knead it vigorously for a couple of minutes until all of the stickiness has gone.
*Important – this step cannot be skipped – keep kneading the dough until it’s the perfect consistency! If it remains a little sticky then add a touch more flour and mix again until the consistency is right.*
Once the play dough is finished, store in containers and use frequently to encourage creativity and keep your kids entertained for hours!
