This weekend is Mother’s Day and I want to wish all of you wonderful moms a happy day filled with love and laughter! Many mothers face the day alone while their husband is working or while their military husband is deployed. Yet others celebrate with their kids as a single mom. Many moms approach this day with over the top expectations only to be disappointed when it doesn’t turn out as they wanted or planned. Life happens that way and we can’t control all of our circumstances or what others do for us. However, we can do something to create special memories with our kids that will last a lifetime.
This year I want to challenge all of our moms to approach this special day a little differently. Instead of waiting to see what memories will be given to you, decide to make the memories yourself with your family. Many children, especially little ones, would love to do something special with mommy, but they are unable to make that happen for themselves. With a little effort and an adventurous spirit you can plan fun activities that will make this a Mother’s Day to remember! Here are a few ideas to make your time special.
Making Mother’s Day Memories
-
Make a special craft together.
I know, we all love the paper flowers and homemade cards we get from the kids every year, but what if you created something together? Make a hand painted flowerpot. Create a piece of jewelry for mom to wear to church. Craft a mosaic photo frame and put your favorite family picture on display. There are many kits available at the local craft stores that are kid friendly and cute. Not only will you have a personalized gift from your children, but you can enjoy it together for years to come.
-
Plant a fruit tree or a flowering shrub together.
Nature is a great way to draw closer together as a family. Take a trip to the local nursery and pick our something you can plant in your backyard. As it grows, take turns teaching the kids how to care for it and remind them that it’s just like your family. When showered with love and protected by God’s care it will flourish and bear fruit or flower. Not only will you have a lasting improvement around your home, but each person will remember the activity each time they care for the plant.
-
Share your favorite memories of each other.
Sit down together and take turns having each family member tell their favorite family memory or story. This would be a sweet time to tell the story of how each child was born and came to be a part of the family. It might surprise you how detailed the little ones get when describing their memories about their favorite person – mom!
-
Plan and cook a special meal together.
Have everyone take part and make it a time to remember. It doesn’t have to be on Mother’s Day. You can dine at leisure and enjoy a homemade brunch on Saturday before the holiday. It doesn’t have to be perfect or fancy. It just needs to be a happy time for the family to share a home cooked meal together.
-
Pray together as a family.
Truly being thankful for each other is so very important. Gather the family circle and take turns thanking God for each other and pray for His blessing on your family.
Mother’s Day is a special time to celebrate the joy of being a part of a family. Don’t take for granted the blessings you have by having a mother or by being one!
